Kaiser Permanente Behavioral Healthcare Workers began their open-ended strike on Monday, October 21st. On day 2 of the strike, the Inland Empire Labor Council joined NUHW members on the picket line in Riverside, California. Workers were also joined by members of UNAC/UHCP, UDW, and USW 7600 showing solidarity between the different unions of the area.
A rally occurred at around 12, with many animated speakers outlining their personal and collective struggles. These speakers included: Patients, members of NUHW from rank-and-file to union leaders to bargaining unit members, members of the unions mentioned above, and the IELC’s Chief-of-Staff Celene Perez.
Workers emphasized that they are prioritizing the needs of their patients and aren’t seeking more than any other Kaiser worker, simply the same pay and conditions as their colleagues in northern California. Worker’s aren’t being given time to decompress and do essential tasks after sessions such as communicating with other patients or scheduling appointments, and are instead made to feel as though they’re “on an assembly line” that never ends.
