Solidarity in Action: AFSCME 3299’s Recent Strike

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready…

On the 20th and 21st of November, AFSCME 3299 conducted a two-day strike amidst their ongoing contract negotiations. The specific intention of this two-day unfair labor practice strike was due to UC’s announcement of a hike in healthcare costs–which would significantly impact workers’ livelihoods.

The two-day strike was a lively one, with strong shows of support from the campus and wider community. On November 21st, the IELC was marching and rallying alongside these essential employees. Familiar slogans rang out throughout the day.

In the afternoon, speakers took to addressing the crowd. Assemblymember Corey Jackson spoke in addition to 3299 members, IELC staff, and students. As was mentioned in Ricardo Cisneros and Celene Perez’s Labor of Love interviews, AFSCME 3299 played an especially important role in their entering the labor movement. This was echoed in their remarks to the crowd.

While their picket is over, the fight for respect and quality jobs at UC is not.  UC has still failed to negotiate a contract with these workers since negotiations began — in January! Be sure to continue supporting UC workers as this fight continues.
