On March 12, 2025 members of SEIU 1000 held an informational picket across the state of California. Workers gathered in order to send a message to Governor Gavin Newsom against his recent executive order. This “Back-to-Office” order will force state workers back into office 4 days a week by July hurting productivity and most of all, workers.
Governor Newsom’s order comes shortly after President Donald Trump’s Executive Order forcing all federal workers to return to in-person work. Trump’s false perception that most federal workers telework drives his recent executive order . It still came despite the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) disproving these myths and showing that only 10% of federal employees work fully remote.
The work that some SEIU 1000 members do is federally funded as well, although it varies by department. Union members are already worried that their jobs will be at risk from the Trump Administration and the anti-worker Department of Government Efficiency. Workers across the state don’t need more stress from their bosses, their governor, or their president!
Another anti-worker mandate
SEIU 1000 members have cited a variety of reasons against Governor Newsom’s Back-to-Office mandate. They include:
- Higher costs for workers and tax-payers due to commuting and paying for parking, in addition to more traffic
- Higher productivity from workers who telework
- Insufficient office space for workers
- Many cannot afford to live in the areas they serve remotely, they will have to return to offices in areas that don’t have space for workers who do serve the local area
Union members are also upset that SEIU 1000 was not consulted before making this decision. This fight against the Back-to-Office mandate comes amid SEIU 1000’s Fight for 4% campaign, which had a local action last month.
