NUHW’s Strike and UCR Students: A Partnership for Change

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready…

On April 7th, Dr. Ellen Reese welcomed NUHW member Karina Sicairos to her class on health equity at UC Riverside. The purpose of class that day was to have students pair with an organization for the duration of class. For 8 weeks, students would give an hour of support to their chosen organization for class credit.

Karina gave a brief pitch to students about NUHW’s ongoing contract campaign. She went over the union’s history, values, and critical strike updates. Following this presentation, Karina told the students what she has learned being on strike and what they’d be doing as the student support wing.

Support is critical at this time for NUHW, as they’ve been on strike for 6 months. This student support is going to be well received! Bargaining is set to continue in the coming week, but in the meantime support is needed. Visit ielabor.org/DonateNUHW to show solidarity in this time of need. Stay up to date with their 5 day hunger strike here.

This class visit arose after the IE Labor and Community Center connected us with Dr. Reese, who we in turn connected to NUHW. We’re happy to say that the visit was a success! Karina later let us know that over a dozen students had reached out to her after class to express their interest in assisting NUHW.
