The Inland Empire Labor & Community Center (IELCC) recently honored the 2025 recipients of the Bill Perez Scholarship during a celebratory luncheon at UC Riverside’s Barn. Now in its second year, the scholarship recognizes UCR undergraduate students who demonstrate a deep commitment to justice in the workplace and beyond.

Named after Bill Perez, a retired IBEW Local 440 electrician who dedicated 47 years to the Inland Empire labor movement, the scholarship honors a legacy rooted in advocating for the rights of both union and non-union workers. Bill’s decades of service have left an indelible mark on the region, and the scholarship continues that legacy by uplifting future labor champions.

Applications were carefully reviewed by a committee made up of community members, IELCC advisors, Inland Empire Labor Council staff, and Bill’s own sister—described by Bill as the expert on his life and values. Hand-selected by Bill to serve on the committee, she helped ensure that each recipient reflected the heart of the movement her brother helped build.

Before the awardees were announced, Bill addressed the room with heartfelt words. Pointing to his mother and sister seated nearby, he credited them as the foundation of his life’s work. He reflected on the decades he spent organizing in the region and expressed deep gratitude for witnessing a new generation rise to carry the torch. He felt lucky to see young people picking up the baton and shaping this region into one that stands for workers and their families.

This year’s recipients—Amisha Dohgra, Eren Whitfield, and Paolina Ochoa—embody that vision. Their passion, leadership, and commitment to equity exemplify the values Bill Perez has spent a lifetime fighting for.

As the labor movement evolves, one thing remains constant: the power of intergenerational solidarity. The IELCC is proud to support these students as they step into leadership and continue building a more just Inland Empire.
